Puerto Rico has surged in popularity as a travel destination, becoming the second most-searched location in the Caribbean, according to a report by UN Tourism and travel data platform Amadeus. With a 22% year-over-year increase in search volume, the island climbed from fourth place in 2023 to second place, just behind the Dominican Republic, which holds the top spot due to its affordable flights and extensive promotion of cultural and natural attractions.

The report highlights Puerto Rico’s significant appeal, especially in the U.S., Argentina, and the U.K., where the island has attracted strong interest, driven by its diverse attractions and commitment to enhancing its tourism infrastructure. The U.S. remains the largest source market for Caribbean travel, accounting for 61% of all travel interest, while Canada follows at 9%.

The ranking also included other Caribbean hotspots such as Jamaica, Cuba, and Aruba, with Curaçao showing the highest growth rate in travel demand at 30% due to increased connectivity to South American markets. Notably, San Juan, Puerto Rico’s vibrant capital, recorded a 26% year-over-year increase in travel searches, securing its position among the top 30 most sought-after Caribbean cities.

UN Tourism noted that while overall flight bookings to the Caribbean from September to December 2024 showed a slight decline from 2023, demand for the region’s beach and cultural destinations remained robust. The trend reflects a broader interest in American beach destinations as holiday getaways, with high search rates for Mexico and South American countries like Chile, Colombia, and Peru.

The report, titled “Travel Insights: Focus on Americas, September to December 2024,” utilized data from Amadeus’s Navigator360, covering more than 200 million searches and bookings daily. It provides a detailed analysis of international travel interest in the Caribbean and the Americas, underscoring Puerto Rico’s growing allure as a premier destination within the region.

UN Tourism’s report confirms that tourism demand in the Caribbean is resilient, despite global economic challenges, with Puerto Rico emerging as a key player in driving regional tourism growth.
